Blue Moon's Graffiti Collection - Pine in the Neck - Giants Baseball and fast-pitch softball puts me in a beer mood today, so in honor of my nephew, TJ Kren, I present Blue Moon's Graffiti Collection - Pine in the Neck - Double IPA brewed with Juniper berries! Just the right amount of hopiness, and only a faint hint of juniper...according to the label, it's "a bold beer that's nature-proof." I guess that means bears won't drink it...

1.5 oz white rum
Ginger ale

Combine ingredients over ice in a collins glass; garnish with a lemon twist.

Summer Cocktail Month: June 10, 2013

The Mint Julep : There are several ways you can make this drink, each of which is labeled "best" or "traditional." I think your choice depends on how much you like Bourbon. This is definitely not a drink for "sipping" bourbon - use the cheap stuff!

3 oz bourbon (Jim Beam works fine)
2 mint sprigs
1 T simple syrup

Fill a Tom Collins glass with crushed ice and let it get cold. Muddle the mint in the simple syrup, add the bourbon and shake over ice; strain into the crushed ice. Optional: Float 1 oz Peachtree Schnapps or Rum, garnish with a mint sprig. Voila. You're ready for the ra
ces...!

Summer Cocktail Month: June 1, 2013

Strawberry Basil Sangria - I made a few adjustments to the recipe - replaced the white grape juice with moscato, and I made mine a day ahead, just to see what would happen. If you do that, wait to add the soda water until you're ready to serve. It didn't hurt it, but you could easily make and serve this within an hour! Now, off to the porch to monitor the Cardinals-Giants...

1/2 lb fresh strawberries, sliced thin
1 apple, diced
1 oz fresh basil leaves, scored, but not cut
1/2 cup organic sugar
1 bottle (750 ml) cheap white wine
1 cup moscato
1 cup club soda

Combine the strawberries, apple, sugar and basil in a large pitcher. Combine and let sit for at least 15 minutes (shake to combine). Add soda water, unless you plan to let it sit overnight. For an overnight mix, add the wine and moscato, stir to combine and store in refrigerator overnight.  Before serving, add club soda. If you are serving within an hour, add the soda water first. Not sure what the diff is, because it's A.W.E.S.O.M.E. either way.
